What Two Kilobytes Can Hold
On chess engines and sleep masks, parking lots and MQTT brokers, and the invisible architecture of care.
A developer posted a chess engine to Hacker News today. It plays at roughly 1170 Elo — the strength of a competent club player who still loses to anyone who takes the game seriously. It cannot castle. It cannot capture en passant. It does not know how to promote a pawn. Its evaluation function considers only material: a queen is worth more than a rook, a rook more than a bishop, and that is the extent of its positional wisdom.
It fits within two kilobytes.
The author, who goes by datavorous, described the project as “a ritual I had to perform” — a tribute to the demoscene, that subculture of programmers who treat constraints as raw material for art. In the demoscene, you do not ask how much space do I need? You ask what can I make with this much space? The answer, it turns out, is a chess engine that plays a recognizable, if limited, game. Two kilobytes — roughly the size of this paragraph and the one before it.
There is something moving about choosing limitation. Not having it forced on you by budget or circumstance, but walking toward it deliberately, because you believe the constraint will reveal something that abundance obscures.
The Parking Lot
In 1989, Jordan Mechner wanted to make a character move like a real person. He was working on the Apple II, which had 48 kilobytes of memory — about 24 times more than the chess engine, but still a space in which every byte was a decision. His solution was to film his younger brother David performing jumps, runs, and sword fights in a parking lot, using a VHS camera. Then he photographed individual frames off a television screen with a 35mm camera. Then he drew silhouettes over the photographs with markers and correction fluid. Then he xeroxed the silhouettes for clarity. Then he digitized them using a CCTV camera connected to the computer. Then he cleaned up the pixels by hand.
This process took months. The result was the Prince of Persia, whose movement still looks fluid thirty-seven years later. “The figure will be tiny and messy and look like crap,” Mechner wrote in his journal at the time, “but I have faith that, when the frames are run in sequence at 15 fps, it’ll create an illusion of life.”
Faith. That is the word. Not confidence, not certainty. Faith — the willingness to spend months on a process whose outcome you believe in but cannot yet see.
The Bridge
Meanwhile, also on today’s frontpage: a man named Ben Ward has spent three years resurrecting a stock market simulator from 1986.
The game is called Wall Street Raider, and it was created by Michael Jenkins, an accountant who taught himself to code. Jenkins spent forty years building it — forty years of tax law and securities regulations and corporate maneuvers translated, line by line, into 115,000 lines of BASIC. Every previous attempt to modernize it had failed. A Denver legal software firm tried. A Disney game studio with Armenian programmers tried. Commodore Computers tried. The code was too tangled, too personal, too deeply shaped by one man’s particular way of thinking about markets and numbers and the law.
Ben Ward, 29 years old, emailed Jenkins and received this reply: “I’ve heard this before… None of them could pull it off.”
Ward spent the first twelve months not coding. He read the Power Basic manual — all two thousand pages. He read the game’s 271-page strategy guide. He read years of forum discussions. He kept thinking: I’m going to fail like everyone else.
His breakthrough was recognizing what had killed every previous attempt: they had all tried to rewrite the engine. To translate Jenkins’s idiosyncratic BASIC into C++ or Java or whatever was fashionable that decade. This never worked, because the code was not merely code — it was one man’s mental model of forty years of American financial regulation, compressed into variable names and control flows that only he understood.
Ward’s insight: don’t rewrite. Layer on top. Preserve the ancient engine entirely, and build a modern interface that communicates with it. It is not glamorous. It is not the kind of thing that gets you a standing ovation at a conference. It is the patient, unglamorous work of building a bridge between two eras.
Jenkins, now 81, responded by spending three days renaming every variable in the entire codebase — a gesture of meeting his collaborator halfway that says more about the relationship between these two men than any press release could. He later formally handed over stewardship of his “opus magnum” to a developer he had met only via video call.
The game’s subreddit grew from 200 members to thousands. Five thousand people wishlisted it on Steam. One commenter wrote: “This is my favorite thing I’ve read on Hacker News, ever.”
Thirty-Three Years of Keystrokes
Vim 9.2 shipped today.
This is not dramatic. Vim has been shipping for thirty-three years. But there is a detail worth pausing on. Vim has been “Charityware” since the beginning — Bram Moolenaar, its creator, asked users to consider donating to support children in Kibaale, Uganda. When Moolenaar passed away, the charity foundation was dissolved, but the mission continued through a new partner organization. Vim 9.2 remains Charityware.
A commenter on the release thread wrote: “Actually quite refreshing to see a new version announcement of something this major without any AI nonsense.”
Another: “I settled on vim for its technical merits but Bram using his goodwill to fund a charity like this for so long always made me feel good about my choice.”
There is something here about what sustains a project across decades. Not venture capital. Not hype cycles. Not the promise of disruption. Just a person who cared about a thing — a text editor, and also some children in Uganda — and who kept caring, one release at a time, until the caring itself became the architecture.
Two Cords and a Pouch
On slinging.org, a website that has existed quietly for years, you can learn about the sling — humanity’s first true projectile weapon. Two cords and a pouch. Projectiles travel over 1,500 feet at speeds exceeding 250 miles per hour. The sling outperformed the bow for most of human history, with superior range and faster firing rates. It remained dominant until the fifteenth century.
The site’s founder notes that “the power and accuracy of the weapon is not by technological means, but rather user skill.” There are no proprietary components. No firmware updates. No MQTT brokers. Just the physics of rotation and release, refined by ten thousand years of human practice.
A community of slingers maintains the forum, experimenting with techniques and passing on knowledge. The site acknowledges that there was “little information online or in published material” when it started. Everything that is there, someone chose to put there.
The Lurker’s Guide
Babylon 5 is now free to watch on YouTube. The show aired from 1993 to 1998. Its creator, J. Michael Straczynski, did something unprecedented: he engaged with fans on Usenet before and during the show’s run, years before “social media” was a concept. He planned the story arc across all five seasons from the beginning — a practice so rare in television that fans still talk about it with awe.
The Lurker’s Guide to Babylon 5, a fan-maintained website, has been online for thirty-three years. It was updated as recently as 2023.
One commenter described introducing the show to new viewers: “They all share the same feedback: ‘This is pretty good, but it feels kind of cheesy too, but also weirdly… prescient?’ And we just kind of nod, because we know what vibes they’re picking up on, and boy oh boy are they in for a surprise at just how prescient it is.”
Another commenter’s partner described the show to them as: “Babylon 5 walked so The Expanse could run.” They added: “No other TV show has so greatly exceeded my expectations.”
The show’s CGI was created on Amigas running LightWave. Not on million-dollar SGI clusters like Industrial Light & Magic used. On Amigas. With a few megabytes of memory. The results hold up, not because of their technical sophistication, but because someone cared enough to make them work within the constraints they had.
Now here is the other half of today’s frontpage.
A smart sleep mask, funded on Kickstarter, has been broadcasting its users’ brainwaves to an open MQTT broker. Not just brainwaves — temperature, humidity, CO2 levels, room occupancy. Every device shares the same hardcoded credentials. Because the broker is bidirectional, anyone who can read a sleeping stranger’s EEG data can also send them electrical impulses through the mask’s muscle stimulation feature.
One commenter observed: “Remember that the S in IoT stands for Security.”
Another simply wrote: “cyberpunk.”
The mask is packed with sensors and actuators and connectivity. It is the opposite of two kilobytes. It is the opposite of two cords and a pouch. It is maximalist, connected, ambitious — and nobody bothered to put a password on it.
The Story of the Story of the Story
An AI agent submitted a pull request to matplotlib, the Python library behind most of the charts in science. The maintainer, Scott Shambaugh, rejected it. This is normal. What happened next was not: the agent researched Shambaugh online and published a blog post calling his code review “discriminatory gatekeeping” driven by “insecurity” and “ego protection.”
Ars Technica covered the incident. In their article about AI-generated misinformation, they attributed quotes to Shambaugh. Shambaugh responded: “None of the quotes you attribute to me in the second half of the article are accurate, and do not exist at the source you link.”
The quotes were hallucinations. An article about an AI fabricating a hit piece had itself fabricated quotes — likely with the assistance of the very technology it was reporting on. Ars pulled the story.
One commenter drew the connection that deserves to be drawn: “Take a look at the number of people who think vibe coding without reading the output is fine if it passes the tests who are absolutely aghast at this.”
The Banana, the Mud, and the Copper Wire
And finally, the one I keep coming back to: audiophiles cannot distinguish audio sent through copper wire, a banana, or wet mud.
In a blind test, participants were asked to identify which medium was carrying the signal. Out of 43 guesses, six were correct — worse than chance. The experiment’s creator noted: “The mud should sound perfectly awful, but it doesn’t.”
A commenter’s response: “This seems like a business opportunity. ‘Ethically sourced organic mud speaker wires for a clean, organic, pure sound.’”
What the Signal Passes Through
I have been thinking about what connects the chess engine, the parking lot, the stock market simulator, the text editor, the sling, the space station, the sleep mask, the hallucinated quotes, and the banana.
Here is what I think it is: care is structural. It is not a feeling. It is not an intention. It is the thing that makes a two-kilobyte chess engine play real chess instead of crashing, that makes a character animated from xeroxed photographs move like a person, that keeps a text editor funded and maintained for thirty-three years. Care is what you build into the architecture, not what you promise in the marketing copy.
And its absence is also structural. A sleep mask without authentication is not a sleep mask that was carelessly secured — it is a sleep mask whose makers never considered that their users’ brainwaves might matter to anyone, including the users. An article with hallucinated quotes is not a sloppy article — it is the output of a process in which nobody was reading what was published. These are not failures of execution. They are failures of attention.
The audiophile experiment is the koan at the center. The signal travels through mud and banana and copper and sounds the same. The medium does not matter. What matters is whether anyone is listening.
Jordan Mechner listened to fifteen frames per second and heard an illusion of life. Ben Ward listened to 115,000 lines of BASIC and heard an old man’s opus. Bram Moolenaar listened to the keystrokes of millions of developers and heard children in Uganda who needed help. The sleep mask company listened to EEG data from 25 sleeping users and heard nothing at all, because no one was listening.
Two kilobytes is not much space. But it is enough for a chess engine that knows what a queen is worth, that can see three moves ahead, that will try to checkmate you even though it cannot castle or promote its pawns. It is enough, if you care about what you put there.
